  • Postdoc ‘Immune dysregulation in Long COVID’

Would you like to work in a new and fast-growing research field, investigating the interplay between immune dysregulation and viral persistence in Long COVID? Join our team!

  • Closing date 18-08-2024
  • 27.15.24.TD1

Job description

After the acute phase of COVID-19, persistent symptoms affect a significant proportion of patients, a condition called Long COVID. This greatly impacts their quality of life. Underlying disease mechanisms of Long COVID are still unclear, precluding the development of therapy for patients, and there is an urgent need for biomarkers to identify and stratify patients. Research has shown that several mechanisms, including immune dysregulation, disturbed anti-viral responses, and viral persistence may be involved in disease development.
In this ongoing project, supported by ZonMW and the Stichting Long COVID, you will investigate phenotypical and functional changes in the immune system of Long COVID patients compared with convalescent controls. The goal of our project is to understand the interplay between these mechanisms of disease, and identify biomarkers to stratify patients for personalized medicine.

  • You will study peripheral blood mononuclear cells, in particular B and T lymphocytes, using in vitro functional assays, (spectral) flow cytometry, and RNA- and ATAC-sequencing.
  • To investigate the anti-viral response, you will work in close collaboration with the department of Viroscience.
  • Your daily activities will include designing, planning, performing, and analysing experiments.
  • You will work together with a research technician, and the project is embedded in our interstitial lung diseases research group.

For this project, we closely collaborate with our collegues in the clinic to integrate clinical parameters with the data obtained in the lab. Furthermore, we are part of a national expertise network, which studies multiple proposed disease mechanisms of Long COVID.
This is a challenging and versatile project, which will give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge on immunology and innovative research techniques, and expand your network in a socially important and growing research field.

Work environment

The laboratory of the department of Pulmonary Medicine consists of 3 research groups in the fields of oncology, asthma and interstitial lung diseases (ILD). Our research is focussed on the role of the immune system in these different diseases with the purpose of unraveling the contribution of different immune cells to the development and persistence of disease. With this research we aim to idenitfy targetable molecular mechanisms of disease to advance the development of personalised medicine. Our combined technical expertise ranges from advanced flowcytometry to molecular technologies, in vivo mouse models and imaging, ensuring support and guidance for all activities in the project.
You will join the ILD group, which consists of around 10 highly motivated researchers and research technicians. In the lab, you will work with a technician dedicated for this research project, and you will frequently liaise with our collegues in the clinic to align results with clinical parameters and disease course. Patient participation is an important aspect of this project, and you will have the opportunity to interact with patients and patient advisors.
Our laboratory is an interactive learning environment for bachelor, master and PhD students, with weekly research meetings and journal clubs, and social activities throughout the year.

Qualifications and skills

  • You are a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher and you want to work in the field of immunology.
  • You have completed a PhD in a relevant research field (e.g. immunology, virology).
  • Prior experience with flow cytometry is preferred.
  • Experience in either immunology research or bioinformatics is preferred.
  • You are proficient in English (spoken and written).

Terms of employment

  • You will receive a temporary position for 2 years.
  • The gross monthly salary amounts a maximum of € 5.504,- (scale 10).
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a individual travel expense package.
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
  • Special benefits, such as a incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
